Teenage depression is an authentic problem. A WHO report states that adolescent depression is a real problem in India. It has the highest suicide rate of all South-East Asian countries. Although it was believed that depression did not affect teenagers or children, the truth is that untreated depression is the leading cause of death in teens.

Teenage depression is challenging to identify as symptoms may resemble normal adolescent moodiness. It can be challenging to distinguish a teenager with depression from someone who is just experiencing moodiness. Many teens feel sad and moody sometimes.

Teenage years can be a difficult time for teens. It’s easy for teens to experience mood swings due to the many hormone changes and other life changes. Depression is more than just moodiness. Depression is a severe mental condition that can lead to suicidal thoughts or behaviors. This is a painful condition that can significantly impact every aspect of a teenager’s life. If left untreated, depression can lead to substance abuse (illicit drug use), academic failure, eating disorders, or suicide.

Why do teens get depressed? Teenagers can become depressed for many reasons. Teens can feel worthless about their grades, academic performance, social standing amongst peers, and unstable family lives. These factors can all affect the way they behave. Teenagers cannot seek out help on their own, as adults do. Teenagers rely on their teachers, parents, and elders to recognize their pain and provide the support they need.

How can you recognize warning signs? Here are some of the most prominent symptoms for teens suffering from depression:

  • Feelings that you are helpless or sad.
  • Low self-esteem.
  • Trouble concentrating and making decisions.
  • Weight gain or loss due to lack of appetite or excessive eating.
  • Anger and irritability that is easy to get.
  • Loss of interest or enjoyment in the activities they used to enjoy.
  • Social withdrawal is the omission of contact with family and friends.
  • Feeling tired and lacking energy.
  • Self-criticism is harsh.
  • Suicide and self-harm thoughts.

These signs may not be evident initially, but they should be taken seriously as warning signs. It is essential to understand what teen depression looks like and what you can do to help if you see it. They could benefit from your constant support.
